When the way back becomes difficult: walking safely around Kemer

The Lycian Way connects sea and mountains. Between them are decisions no holiday photograph shows: Is there enough daylight? Can we rely on the next water source? Does anyone know when we expected to return?

Two bicycles in my headlights

After watching the sunset in the mountains, I was driving my Land Rover down through a canyon. Two mountain bikers were ahead of me, without lights. It was pitch-black. I followed slowly and lit their way with my headlights. That encounter stayed with me: a beautiful outing had become a situation dependent on a stranger happening to arrive.

I have also picked up walkers caught in heavy rain or struggling with unsuitable equipment. Once a woman turned her ankle and broke her foot; I took her and her walking group down to the valley in my Land Rover. These are my personal memories, not official rescue reports. Chance assistance is not a safety plan, and a private vehicle does not replace medically organised rescue.

What documented incidents tell us

AKUT records a multi-day search and rescue of three missing walkers at Göynük Canyon in January 2015. [1] Another report describes a broken foot and roughly five hours of stretcher evacuation in 2019. [2]

These are individual incidents, not accident statistics. They do not explain another disappearance. A report dated 21 October 2026 describes a search for a woman walking between Kaş and Demre, outside Kemer. Our reviewed sources establish neither an outcome nor an accident cause. Reviewed: 23 October 2026. [3]

Small decisions before setting out

Choose the specific stage around experience, ascent, terrain and the slowest person in the group. A distance on a screen is not a reliable walking time. Check the start, return journey, escape options and closures with someone who knows the route. A saved track does not establish that a path is passable today.

Carry an offline map and know how to use it. Plan for a charged phone, spare power, a headtorch for everyone, suitable shoes, rain and warm layers, first-aid kit, food and enough water with a reserve. Do not rely on unconfirmed springs or continuous mobile coverage. [4]

Before setting off: five clear answers

  • Route, exit options and return arranged
  • Weather and closures checked
  • Water, food, weather protection and lights packed
  • Offline map ready and phone charged
  • Contact and check-in time confirmed

Rain changes a path – and a canyon faster still

Beach weather does not describe mountain conditions. Check local advice and warnings from Türkiye’s weather service MGM. Do not enter canyon or streambed stages during heavy-rain or flood danger, and never cross floodwater. A sunny interval is not an all-clear. [5]

Set a turnaround time and a generous daylight margin. If you lose your bearings, stop somewhere safe, consult your map and avoid tempting shortcuts into steeper ground. Turning back or cancelling is a good decision when conditions are wrong.

On a mountain bike, the last kilometre counts too

My encounter in the dark canyon is an example, not advice to improvise a vehicle escort. Plan to return before darkness. Working front and rear lights with spare power, a helmet, checked brakes and appropriate repair equipment belong in your preparations. A phone torch is not suitable bicycle lighting.

Not every walking trail is suitable or permitted for mountain biking. Discuss riding ability, terrain, walking sections and the return separately. If visibility or your ability is inadequate, stop in a safe place and arrange help or collection.

Look before you sit down

When resting or camping, inspect your seat, timber, stones and footwear. Do not put your hands blindly into cracks or beneath wood; check shoes and equipment before use and keep the tent closed. Snakes, scorpions and spiders are no reason to panic or handle wildlife. We make no claim here about local frequency or the danger of particular species.

For a suspected snakebite: call 112, remain calm and avoid unnecessary movement. Do not cut, suck or apply a tourniquet. Severe reactions to a sting also warrant 112. Follow the emergency operator’s instructions. [6]

Someone needs to know you are back

Agree explicitly with a contact who will hold your route, start, expected return, companions and phone numbers. Decide when a missed check-in should lead to follow-up or an alarm. Report changes and arrival. A message becomes an arrangement only when the recipient confirms it.

As a small hotel, we can get to know you and bring local experience to planning. Ask us about a return check-in before your outing; together we establish who is available and what they can undertake. This is not continuous monitoring and does not replace an emergency call.

When help is needed

For injury, serious danger or being stranded in Türkiye, call 112. Give coordinates or your last reliable location, route, group size and the problem. Remain reachable and follow instructions. Mountain mobile reception is not guaranteed; risky climbing to find a signal is not a solution. [7]

AFAD is the state disaster and emergency authority. Depending on the incident, Antalya’s response can involve Jandarma/JAK, medical teams and volunteer rescue organisations. KEMKUT is Kemer’s local search-and-rescue association; AKUT is a separate organisation. These are orientation references, not hotel partners or promises of a response time. [2], [8], [9]

Local knowledge starts a better day

Ask early for experienced assistance suited to your activity. Walking, technical mountaineering and climbing require different skills. Check the route, qualifications, group size, equipment and bad-weather arrangements before booking.

We help coordinate a stay and a suitable tour enquiry. Our climbing page also explains Florian’s experience and the historical Karataş guide: background information, not current approval of bolts or descents. The aim is not the longest distance, but a good day everyone returns from.
